Join our own Amanda Kammerdener, Ambassador for SunriseWALKS-Long Island

By Tina Villalobos, Publisher for Town of Babylon-Deer Park-West Islip Macaroni Kid May 17, 2016
The 11th ANNUAL SunriseWALKS will be on June 5, 2016. Join as they help give summer back to children with cancer.

Sunrise Day Camps unite to help give children with cancer a summer free from the daily demands of their illness. Kids can make friends and have fun just like every other kid does at camp. Children with cancer and their siblings are provided a full summer of day camp at no cost to them.

Join Sunrise WALKS Long Island at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in Wheatley Heights to WALK for these children and help give them a summer to remember. SunriseWALKS is located at 75 Colonial Springs Road, Wheatley Heights, NY 11798, just a few minutes east of 110. It is a fun, non-competitive race the entire family can enjoy. There will be live music, face painting, carnival games, prizes and more. Your support will be so greatly appreciated and will help children with cancer enjoy the summer.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:00 a.m with a finish line celebration that includes rides, games, music, prizes, face painting, refreshments (bagels, juice, & coffee), and more! The entry fee is $10 per child (12 and under) and adults are $20. The course is geared to accommodate beginner (.75 miles), intermediate (1.7 miles), and challenger (3.1 miles/5K).

SunriseWALKS Camper Ambassador - Massapequa’s Own Amanda Kammerdener
Last winter, Amanda was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  In spite of the hospital stays, chemotherapy and frequent spinal taps, Amanda continues to meet all of her challenges with optimism and hope. Sunrise Day Camp–Long Island — the only full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, offered free of charge — has been instrumental in keeping Amanda's spirits high, even at the darkest of times.

This year, Amanda has been given the incredible honor of representing Sunrise Association as the National Camp Ambassador for the 2016 SunriseWALKS. Because Sunrise has been such a blessing to her, Amanda is hoping to raise as much money as possible for SunriseWALKS so that other kids like her can have this magical experience.

About Sunrise Day Camps
Providing memorable summers since 2006 for children ages 31/2–16, Sunrise Day Camps bring the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness. And because Sunrise is a day camp, it does all this while allowing the children to continue their medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night. There are currently four Sunrise Day Camps  — two in New York (on Long Island & in Pearl River) and two in Israel (Even Yehuda and Be’er Sheva).    In 2016, two new camps will open in Staten Island, NY, and Baltimore, MD. Sunrise Day Camps are affiliated with 25 renowned hospitals and medical centers. Sunrise Sundays and Fun-days offer children exciting activities and events when school is not in session; Sunrise on Wheels is a one-of-a-kind program that provides hours of Sunrise-fun to children undergoing treatment in pediatric oncology units of participating hospitals.

Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island is a proud member of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide, through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, Year-Round Programs and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, all offered free of charge. Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island is a program of the Friedberg JCC, a beneficiary agency of UJA-Federation of New York.
